10 Powerful Tips to Overcome Dental Anxiety

2022-02-01
/
Dr. Kyle D. Eberlein, DDS

Each day, people visit the dentist for a variety of reasons. Whether it be to get a standard cleaning, a cavity filled, or to have their teeth whitened, many patients still feel nervous about visiting the dentist's office. By following these ten tips, you can overcome your dental anxiety and make your next dentist appointment a breeze.

Tip 1: Find Comfort in Knowing How Common Dental Anxiety Is

Dental anxiety is a very common phobia. In fact, it is estimated that anywhere from 50 to 80% of adults in the US have some form of dental anxiety. Knowing that you are not alone in your fear of the dentist can help ease some stress and allow for a more relaxed visit to the dentist.

Tip 2: Slow Your Breathing and Use Relaxation Techniques

When we feel fearful, our breathing becomes shallow and quick. By incorporating some relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, you can calm yourself down and allow the relaxation response to take over.

Tip 3: Bring a Friend to Your Next Dental Appointment

It is always more comforting having a trusted friend or family member with you when in an uncomfortable situation. When you bring someone with you, you are less likely to focus on your fears.

Tip 4: Arrive Early

If you can, try to arrive at the dentist's office a little bit early. For most people, feeling rushed increases stress. Giving yourself a little extra time before your appointment can help avoid extra unease.

Tip 5: Bring a List of Questions to Ask Your Dentist

Many people are nervous about asking the dentist questions, but it is important to feel comfortable with your dental professional. Sometimes, it’s not knowing the answer that can make us nervous. Bring your questions to your next appointment. Getting answers from your dentist can help you feel more at ease. Ask anything you feel is important to know, and don't be afraid to speak up.

Tip 6: Don't Assume the Worst

Many of us assume that we have a cavity or gum disease without going to get it checked out by our dentist. This is often because of our fear of the dentist. When we assume the worst, it only adds to our dental anxiety. If you have any concerns about your teeth, ask the dentist to check it out. Chances are everything will be fine, and you can put yourself at ease by getting checked out.

Tip 7: Find Out if Sedation is an Option

If you are extremely anxious about visiting the dentist, speak with your dental professional about sedation. Several different types of sedatives can be used, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Although sedatives are not meant to be used daily, they can help you relax during your next dental appointment.

Tip 8: Take Care of Your Teeth

By maintaining good dental hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleaning, you can help avoid a variety of problems. Tooth decay can be a major cause of dental anxiety. Taking care of your teeth can help ease some of that fear.

Tip 9: Educate Yourself About Dental Procedures

One of the best ways to ease your fears is to learn about what will happen during your dental appointment. This can be done by reading about different dental procedures or watching videos online. You will feel more comfortable and less anxious when you know what to expect before your appointment and can prepare for it.

Tip 10: Visit the Dentist More Often

If you are nervous about visiting the dentist, simply visiting your dental professional more often can help. By getting to know your dentist as a person, you are less likely to be worried during your appointment. If you know that there are no problems with your teeth or gums, this can also help to reduce your stress.

By following these tips, you can overcome dental nervousness and have a more positive experience at the dentist's office. Remember to be patient and try different techniques until you find what works best for you. With a little bit of effort, you can overcome your fear and have healthy teeth and gums for years to come.
